Wispr Flow works, but it is cloud-only, costs $15 a month ($12 billed annually) and gives you 2,000 free words a week on desktop. Which alternative is best depends on why you are leaving. For a lower price, a one-time license, offline use or Linux, start with Superwhisper. For a free option, try Spokenly's local tier or the open-source Handy. For a near-identical swap, Willow Voice. We sell none of these apps. Every price below was read from the vendor's own page on November 8, 2026.
Why do people look for a Wispr Flow alternative?
Wispr Flow does the core job well: press a hotkey, talk, and cleaned-up text lands in whatever app has focus. Our Wispr Flow review rates it 4.0 out of 5. The reasons to leave are concrete. It always processes audio in the cloud. Pro is $15 a month. It has no lifetime option and no Linux app. Its free plan stops at 2,000 words a week on Mac and Windows.
Pick your reason below. Each section names the best option for it and says what you give up.

Is there a free alternative to Wispr Flow?
Yes, three. Spokenly’s Local tier costs $0 forever, needs no account and runs Whisper or Parakeet models on your device. Superwhisper’s Free plan allows unlimited dictation on local Whisper models, plus up to two modes without AI processing. Handy is open source and free everywhere it runs.
The catch is cleanup. Free local dictation gives you a transcript. The filler-word removal, tone matching and context awareness that Wispr Flow bundles come with paid plans on Superwhisper and Spokenly. Wispr Flow’s own free plan is also real, so if your only problem is the 2,000-word weekly cap, a local free tier is the fix.
What is the best open-source alternative to Wispr Flow?
Handy is the safest start. It is MIT-licensed, runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and transcribes locally with Whisper or Parakeet models. Linux on Wayland needs extra text-input tools (the README names wtype, dotool or ydotool).
FreeFlow suits technical users on a Mac. It is MIT-licensed and has no server of its own. By default it sends audio to Groq with a free API key you create, and you can point it at a local OpenAI-compatible server such as Ollama or LM Studio instead. VoiceInk is GPL-3.0, Mac only and offline. The source is free; if you want the built app, you buy a license from tryvoiceink.com (Solo $25, Personal $39 for two Macs, Extended $49 for three, all with lifetime updates).
Which alternative works offline or runs local models?
Superwhisper, Spokenly, MacWhisper, Handy and VoiceInk all run models on your device. Wispr Flow does not.
Superwhisper is the most complete. It lists Cohere Transcribe and Parakeet as recommended local models on Pro and Whisper models on Free. AI formatting offline needs its local S1-mini model in Message or Mail mode. It also works best on Apple Silicon; Superwhisper itself recommends cloud models for Intel Macs.
MacWhisper is built around transcribing files and keeps audio on your Mac. It lists system-wide dictation too. The free tier is permanent and Pro is a one-time 64 euros with lifetime updates, but the page does not say which dictation features need Pro, so test before you pay.
What is a cheaper alternative, or one with a one-time price?
| Option | Cost to own for 3 years |
|---|
| Wispr Flow Pro, billed annually | $432 |
| Superwhisper Pro, billed annually | about $255 |
| Superwhisper lifetime | $249.99 once |
| MacWhisper Pro (Mac) | 64 euros once |
| Spokenly Local+ | $29 once |
| VoiceInk Solo (Mac) | $25 once |
| Handy, Spokenly Local, Superwhisper Free | $0 |
Superwhisper’s lifetime license beats Wispr Flow’s annual plan after about 21 months, and one key covers unlimited Macs and Windows PCs plus iPhone and Android. If you can live with fewer features, Spokenly Local+ at $29 is the cheapest paid route, though it excludes managed cloud models, so cloud accuracy needs your own API keys. See the Wispr Flow vs Superwhisper page for the full math.
What is the best Wispr Flow alternative for Windows?
Superwhisper has a Windows app and the same lifetime license. Willow Voice also ships on Windows with Wispr-matching prices. Spokenly and Handy cover Windows for free local dictation. VoiceOS lists Windows, but its install flow centers on Mac, so test it first.
Wispr Flow’s one Windows edge is Notetaker, which runs on Mac and Windows. Superwhisper’s Meetings feature is macOS only.
What is the best Wispr Flow alternative for Android?
Superwhisper. It has an Android app on Google Play, and the lifetime license covers it. Wispr Flow also has Android. Willow Voice lists Android under “Coming soon”, and Spokenly does not list it at all. For simple voice typing at no cost, Gboard has a microphone on its keyboard. Google’s help page says talk-to-text does not work with all languages.
What is the best Wispr Flow alternative for Linux?
Wispr Flow has no Linux app. Superwhisper now offers one, with a one-command install, and lists Wayland, a supported desktop and systemd as requirements. Spokenly lists Linux among its platforms. Handy runs on Linux for free, with the Wayland caveats above.
Which alternative is best for privacy, Europe and GDPR?
Pick a local model. With one, your audio never leaves the device, so there is no cross-border transfer to worry about.
Superwhisper’s privacy policy says audio and transcripts never leave your device with local models. Its own cloud models process in memory and do not store the request. It carries a no-training guarantee, with prior notice before that changes. Server logs are kept 30 days, and you can ask for deletion at privacy@superwhisper.com.
Wispr Flow’s privacy page says dictation cloud storage and Notetaker transcripts sit on “Wispr servers.” It names no region and does not mention GDPR, the EU or a data processing agreement, and points security teams to its Trust Center. Spokenly’s pricing page has no GDPR statements either. We did not audit any vendor. If you handle client or patient data, get the DPA in writing first.
Which alternative is better for coding agents?
Superwhisper. Its docs list Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode and other agents, and say it pops up when the agent asks for input so you can answer by voice. Wispr Flow’s homepage lists Cursor, terminals and code editors as places it types, with no agent-specific feature that we found. If you want voice commands beyond typing, VoiceOS runs actions in other apps from a spoken command.
Is there a Google alternative to Wispr Flow?
Not one you buy. Google makes Gboard, whose keyboard microphone dictates on Android phones and tablets. It handles punctuation words such as “period” and “new line”, and Google says it does not work with all languages. Microsoft’s Windows voice typing (Windows key + H) needs an internet connection and uses Azure Speech services, with about 50 languages in Windows 11. Apple’s macOS Dictation is free, and Apple says its processing may be on-device depending on your settings.
All three are free and good for a text message or short note. They do not rewrite your speech into polished prose or adapt tone by app, which is the job you pay Wispr Flow for.
When should you stay with Wispr Flow?
Stay if you want zero setup, you are fine with a cloud app, and the price is not the problem. Wispr Flow is also the clearer pick for teams: Growth ($23 a month, $18 billed annually) adds SAML SSO and organization-wide HIPAA controls with a signed BAA, and Enterprise adds SCIM. Its pricing page shows a second, higher figure beside the Growth prices without saying which is current, so confirm at checkout. How we picked
We read each vendor’s own pricing, privacy and docs pages on November 8, 2026: Wispr Flow, Superwhisper, Willow Voice, Spokenly, MacWhisper, VoiceInk and the Handy and FreeFlow GitHub pages, plus Google, Microsoft and Apple support pages for built-in dictation. Prices are list prices at that date and can change. We did not run a head-to-head accuracy or latency test, and no vendor publishes one worth quoting, so we make no accuracy claims. The first three apps are rated in our own reviews; Spokenly, MacWhisper, Handy, VoiceInk and FreeFlow are described from vendor pages only. Rival apps’ listicles that rank for this search each place their own product first, and we left their claims out. Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to Wispr Flow?
Superwhisper for most individual users. It costs $8.49 a month ($84.99 a year) against Wispr Flow's $15, sells a $249.99 lifetime license, works offline with local models, and runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android and Linux. Willow Voice is the closest like-for-like swap on price and features. Spokenly or Handy are the picks if you want it free.
Is there a free alternative to Wispr Flow?
Yes, several. Spokenly's Local tier is free with unlimited on-device Whisper and Parakeet models and no account. Handy is free, MIT-licensed and offline on Windows, macOS and Linux. Superwhisper's Free plan gives unlimited dictation with local Whisper models. The trade-off is polish: the free local options skip the AI cleanup that paid plans add.
Is there an open-source alternative to Wispr Flow?
Yes. Handy (MIT, Windows, macOS, Linux, fully local) and FreeFlow (MIT, Mac only, bring your own Groq or other API key) are the two closest. VoiceInk is GPL-3.0, Mac only, and processes audio offline; the source is free, and the compiled app is sold with a free trial.
Is there a Wispr Flow alternative that works offline?
Wispr Flow has no offline mode, since its FAQ says transcription always happens in the cloud. Superwhisper, Spokenly, Handy, MacWhisper and VoiceInk all run local models that work without internet once the model is downloaded.
What is a Wispr Flow alternative for Android?
Superwhisper has an Android app on Google Play. Willow Voice lists Android as coming soon. Spokenly does not list Android. If you only need basic voice typing, Gboard's built-in microphone is free.
Is there a Wispr Flow alternative for Linux?
Wispr Flow has no Linux app. Superwhisper now has one (its Linux page lists Wayland, a supported desktop and systemd as requirements). Spokenly and the open-source Handy also run on Linux.
Is there a Google alternative to Wispr Flow?
Google does not sell a desktop product that matches it. On Android, Gboard has built-in voice typing. On Windows, Microsoft's voice typing (Windows key + H) uses online speech recognition. On Mac, built-in Dictation is free and partly on-device. All three are plain speech-to-text with weaker formatting than Wispr Flow.
Which Wispr Flow alternative is best for privacy or GDPR?
A local model is the cleanest answer, because audio never leaves your device. Superwhisper's privacy policy says so for local models and states a no-training guarantee. Wispr Flow's privacy page names no data region, no GDPR terms and no DPA, though it offers to share audit reports with security teams. Ask any vendor for a DPA in writing before you dictate client data.
