ToolsGavel verdict

SurveyMonkey has the deepest survey analysis of the five tools we compared, and if you run real research it earns a look. But 62% of its 1,077 Trustpilot reviews are one-star, and the recurring story is an annual renewal nobody saw coming, followed by a cancellation and refund fight. Add price pages that contradict each other and per-response overage, and we rate it 3.5. Buy it for the analysis, then set the renewal alarm the day you pay.

What we liked

  • Deepest survey toolkit of the five form builders we compared: skip logic from Standard, statistical significance and AI analysis from Advantage, randomization, multilingual surveys and crosstabs on Premier (surveymonkey.com/pricing)
  • A very large review base: secondary sources put G2 at about 4.4 from roughly 23,500 reviews and Capterra at about 4.6 from roughly 10,500, though we could not read either site directly (secondary sources)
  • More than 200 integrations are listed from Standard up, and Zapier is available even on the free Basic plan (surveymonkey.com/pricing)
  • A BAA path exists for HIPAA-enabled accounts, per SurveyMonkey's help center, though we could not confirm which plan includes it (help.surveymonkey.com)

What to watch

  • Billing dominates the complaints: Trustpilot rates SurveyMonkey 2.6 out of 5 from 1,077 reviews, and 62% are one-star. In the recent one-star reviews we read, auto-renewal without notice, surprise annual charges and hard cancellation came up again and again (Trustpilot)
  • Auto-renew is on by default, and switching it off drops you to Basic and can delete responses older than 365 days that exceed the free cap (surveymonkey.com/pricing/individual)
  • Pricing is hard to pin down: our sources give $99 and $149 for Standard Monthly and conflicting response limits, and overage runs $0.10 to $0.15 per response (surveymonkey.com/pricing)
  • The free plan is tiny, and white label plus the advanced logic that research teams want sit at Premier, $139/mo billed annually, with one user per plan unless you buy 3+ team seats (surveymonkey.com/pricing)

SurveyMonkey builds online survey software for customer feedback, employee surveys and market research, with a free Basic plan and paid tiers that add skip logic, analysis tools and white-label branding. Paid individual plans start at $39 a month billed annually (a $300/yr Standard Annual price appears on one SurveyMonkey page only and is unconfirmed), though several of its price figures conflict across sources. Trustpilot rates it 2.6 out of 5 from 1,077 reviews as of November 7, 2026, and 62% of those reviews are one star. For a broader comparison, see our best online form builders guide.

What SurveyMonkey is for

SurveyMonkey is built for surveys rather than general forms. Skip logic arrives at Standard. Advantage adds statistical significance, AI analysis, thematic analysis, multi-survey analysis and payments. Premier adds randomization, multilingual surveys, crosstabs, white label and phone support. Of the five tools we compared, it is the one with the deepest analysis stack. A separate paid Survey Audience panel lets you buy respondents, and it is sold apart from the plans.

If you need a signup form, an order form or an intake packet with a signature, you do not need this depth. Jotform, Fillout and Tally fit that job at lower cost.

What you get on each plan

PlanPriceNotes
Basic$010 questions per survey, 3 collectors, about 10 responses (one source)
StandardUnconfirmed$300/yr appears once; monthly shows as $99 or $149 depending on source
Advantage$468/yr ($39/mo)Payments, significance testing, AI and thematic analysis
Premier$1,668/yr ($139/mo)Randomization, crosstabs, multilingual, white label, phone support
Team Advantage$360/yr per user3+ users, 50,000 responses a year
Team Premier$1,104/yr per user3+ users
EnterpriseQuote5+ users

Figures come from SurveyMonkey’s US price table, a EU-rendered page and a competitor’s pricing write-up, and they do not agree. The EU page lists 15,000 responses a year for Advantage and 40,000 for Premier, while the US table says unlimited with overage. Overage is $0.10 per response on the EU page and $0.15 in the US table. Responses count per year on annual plans, so a busy survey can burn through a cap before the plan renews.

Auto-renewal and cancellation

This is the section to read before you pay. Auto-renew is on by default. The EU pricing page says that turning it off drops the account to Basic and deletes responses older than 365 days beyond the free cap. So the exit has a price: export first, then cancel.

The reviews match that setup. In the roughly 20 recent Trustpilot reviews we read, the one- and two-star complaints repeated three things: a renewal charge with no warning, an unexpected annual bill after a single survey or trial, and a cancellation process that reviewers describe as a dead end. A competitor’s pricing write-up also notes that plans renew on their own. The sample is the recent page only, so it supports a pattern, not an exact share of the 62%.

What users say in reviews

Trustpilot gives SurveyMonkey 2.6 out of 5 from 1,077 reviews: 62% one-star and 21% five-star. One reviewer wrote that “the auto-renewal function does NOT notify the billing owner before the next charge hits.” Another described an “endless electronic dead end” while trying to cancel. One reported a charge above $500 for a survey run a year earlier. Reviewers say refund requests are mostly declined, and we saw no company replies to the negative reviews.

The picture is far kinder on the software review sites. G2 and Capterra blocked direct access, but secondary sources list G2 at about 4.4 from roughly 23,500 reviews and Capterra at about 4.6 from roughly 10,500. Treat those as unconfirmed. The gap between those scores and Trustpilot’s 2.6 is the gap between how the product works and how the billing feels.

Who should skip it

Skip SurveyMonkey if you want a form for contact requests, payments or file uploads, or if you cannot commit to tracking a renewal date. The free plan is tiny, white label and randomization sit at Premier ($139 a month billed annually), and plans below the team tier are one user each. If forms matter more than statistics, start with Jotform, which has 1,856 Trustpilot reviews at 4.2 out of 5. If you want a polished conversational format, compare Typeform, and if budget matters most, read the free plan details in Tally. We rated SurveyMonkey on the product and its billing record, not on the commission we may earn if you sign up through our link.

Pricing note: SurveyMonkey's price pages disagree with each other, so treat the lower tiers as unconfirmed. Basic is free: 10 questions per survey, 3 collectors and, per one US source, about 10 responses. Advantage is $468/yr ($39/mo) in the US table. Premier is $1,668/yr ($139/mo) in the US table, and it is the tier that includes white label (branding removal), randomization, multilingual surveys, crosstabs and phone support. Team Advantage is $360/yr per user with a 3-user minimum and 50,000 responses a year, Team Premier is $1,104/yr per user, and Enterprise is quote-only for 5+ users. Standard is the unclear one: a US table lists $300/yr once, while the monthly-billed Standard shows as $99 or $149 depending on the source, and the EU page shows 1,000 responses a month. Response limits also conflict: the EU page lists 15,000 a year for Advantage and 40,000 for Premier, while the US table says unlimited with overage. Overage is $0.10 per response on the EU page and $0.15 in the US table. Plans auto-renew by default. Turning auto-renew off drops the account to Basic, and responses older than 365 days beyond the Basic cap are deleted, per the EU page. We found no free trial.

Frequently asked questions

How much does SurveyMonkey cost?

In the US table, Advantage is $468 a year ($39/mo) and Premier is $1,668 a year ($139/mo). Team Advantage is $360 per user per year with at least 3 users, and Enterprise is quote-only. Standard is unconfirmed: one source lists $300 a year, and the monthly-billed version shows as $99 or $149 depending on where you look. SurveyMonkey's own pages disagree, so read the price on the checkout screen.

Is SurveyMonkey free?

Basic is free and has no card requirement we could find. It allows 10 questions per survey and 3 collectors. One US source puts the response cap at about 10, though the exact number is unconfirmed. Skip logic, custom design and exports sit on paid tiers.

Why do people complain about SurveyMonkey billing?

Trustpilot is 62% one-star across 1,077 reviews, and the recent low-star reviews we read repeat the same pattern: the plan renews automatically, the billing owner gets no warning, the charge is for a full year, and cancellation or refund requests go nowhere. One reviewer wrote that auto-renewal 'does NOT notify the billing owner before the next charge hits.' Another cited a charge above $500 for a survey run a year earlier. Turn off auto-renew and set your own reminder.

How do I stop SurveyMonkey from renewing?

Auto-renew is on by default. You can switch it off in your account, but the EU pricing page says doing so drops you to the Basic plan and deletes responses older than 365 days that exceed the Basic cap. Export your data before the renewal date, and keep a record of when you cancelled.

Is SurveyMonkey good for HIPAA surveys?

SurveyMonkey's help center says it offers a BAA on HIPAA-enabled accounts. We could not verify which plan tier includes it, so ask SurveyMonkey in writing before collecting health data. Jotform publishes its HIPAA tier (Gold, $99/mo billed annually) on its pricing page.

Bottom line

But 62% of its 1,077 Trustpilot reviews are one-star, and the recurring story is an annual renewal nobody saw coming, followed by a cancellation and refund fight. Add price pages that contradict each other and per-response overage, and we rate it 3.5. Buy it for the analysis, then set the renewal alarm the day you pay.
